Don has been with Bechtel since 1997. During that time, he led the development of the strategy whereby Bechtel entered and became a major participant in the high technology Federal Government market. As a result, the value of Bechtel’s work for the Department of Energy has approached two billion dollars a year since fiscal year 2000. This work has been varied and includes initiatives at several of our nation’s laboratories, national defense installations and environmental restoration sites. Don also performed in Bechtel’s project management arena for three years as the Vice president and Deputy General Manager of the science based first-of-a-kind repository for the nation’s civilian radioactive waste. Don was elected as a Principal Vice President by the Bechtel Board in 2003.
Before joining Bechtel, Don worked for 29 years as a career executive for the United States Department of Energy and it’s predecessor agencies (the Atomic Energy Commission and the Energy Research and Development Administration). His experiences include nuclear weapons manufacturing in Florida and Missouri; space nuclear science in New Mexico; and advanced energy/basic science/national defense in California. In 1992, Don accepted the position as the Associate Deputy Secretary for the Department’s field operations (6000 personnel throughout the country) and later concurrently held the position as the Department’s Chief Financial Officer ($15+ billion in scope). His excellence in leadership, cost-cutting, and the development of people earned him several awards:
- The Agency Gold Medal conferred by the Secretary of Energy
- The Distinguished Award conferred by President Clinton
- The Meritorious Award conferred by President Bush
Don received a BA in Finance from Iona College, New Rochelle, New York and an MBA from the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona. In addition, he has pursued post graduate work at the University of Missouri, the Federal Executive Institute and the Naval Post Graduate School.
Don is a native New Yorker. He and his wife, the former Victoria Chow, reside in Arizona.
